Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
I have a Weltklang alto saxophone with serial number 13461. Can you please tell me when it was made?
Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
Hi,
I would guess 1962 plus minus 1 year.
Let's wait for Mario' input, he can do this more accurately.
Regards,
Tobi.

Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
Thanks, that's about what I guessed too. I have a much later Weltklang alto from 1986 - but it has uneven tone holes so I'm hoping this one will be OK. Is there much of a difference in quality between Weltklang horns from around 1962 and those from 1986?
Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
Quickly, a few comments:
* I never owned a "young" Weltklang Alto, so I'm personally not able to judge about the quality.
* around 1985/1986 started the B&S "Blue Label" production - these were the higher quality horns
* I own a Welklang Alto with SN 14XXX, as well build around 1962 - it has rolled toneholes, as your alto with SN 13461. Mine is equipped with "Full Pearls" and shows really a great intonation and a fat sound. I could not compare it to a younger Weltklang, yet.
* Your alto from 1986 must have straight toneholes - maybe levelling would be an option?
For me, the saxophone from 1962 would be the alto of choice. Enjoy!
Regards,
Tobi.

Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
Tobi, assuming Mario has seen your post, I'm guessing that the reason he has not replied is because your guess of 1962 is correct. Mario, if you see this, can you please tell me the month of manufacture?
Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
I talked to Mario, but he has currently no access to the books.
So, I researched in my data-base, finding the following cornerstones:
SN 13130 JAN 1962
SN 14168 JUL 1962
So, you shall be able to interpolate yourself for SN 13461.
That's as accurate as I can do it.
Cheers,
Tobi.

Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
interessant:

Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
Thanks guys, I guess it was made around early March then. I will let you know how it compares to the 1986 model when I get a chance to try it out...

Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
So, after a bit of work the horn plays and sounds great - it blows the 1986 model away. However, the tuning is very sharp in the high register and flat in the low. I'm using a Selmer S80 mouthpiece, and I'm assuming the sax needs a short shank mouthpiece - am I correct?
Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
I am very much convinced of my '62 Alto, even more compared to my '58 Alto.
Sound-wise, both are excellent (fat), but the intonation is much better for the '62 Alto.
I never owned a Weltklang Solist or a compared horn from the 80s. They are as well supposed to be great and undervalued horns. But sound-wise they are modern and don't have the "vintage Ben Webster" Sound from the 60s.
Do you own a Solist Alto? Or a stencil?
I just recommend a big inner chamber. I'm using an old Otto Link with Baffle, and I don't have any intonation problems with my Alto from 1962. Maybe you can try something similar?

Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
Since my last post I have found that the tuning problem seems to depend largely on the reed used - with a different reed from the same box of D'Addario Hemke 3.0 reeds, the tuning is much more consistent. I will try to get hold of a large chamber mouthpiece such as the one you use to see if this improves matters further. The horn is a Weltklang, and not a stencil, and like you say it has much more of a vintage sound than the 1986 Weltklang, which is a definite plus for me. Furthermore, the action is much lighter and the horn is much more responsive than the 1986 model, so I am very happy especially considering what I paid for the horn (144 GBP!).

I have a Weltklang alto saxophone with serial number 11020. Can you please tell me when it was made? Thanks!
Re: Weltklang alto sax year of manufacture
You are lucky - your saxophone still has the wire keyguards, not the press parts, right?
SN 11020 should have been made in 1960.
It is for sure a very nice instrument. Enjoy!
Regards, Tobi.
